Arches Add Timeless Elegance To This Contemporary, Light-filled Melbourne Residence

Discreet yet romantic, 35 Huntingtower Road in Armadale presents as a sprawling single-dwelling home upon first view. However, the property houses multiple apartments with house-like proportions set over two levels, contained within a colonnade style structure. Conceived through a collaboration between architectural developer Orchard Piper, architects Jolson, landscape architect Myles Baldwin, and interior stylist Tamsin Johnson, 35 Huntingtower Road showcases elegance in its restraint. Opening out onto verdant gardens replete with deciduous plantings, climbers, and flowering shrubs, it’s not your typical apartment block.

“It’s a planting scheme that was originally developed from my background working with the Royal Botanic Gardens,” says landscape architect Myles Baldwin. “Essentially, it’s a contemporary spin on a planting style inspired by the ‘gardenesque’ aesthetic – the grand mid-1800s planting style you would find throughout Europe.”

Architects Jolson employ European-inspired arches throughout the residence, which serve to create a dialogue between the interiors and external gardens, while imbuing the space with a sense of fluidity. “The way arches frame a view to the outside is a beautiful interior experience,” says architect Mat Wright, of Jolson. “For this project, the soft curves and splays, and the way the light falls on them, informed a lot of the interior details. There is a continual play between the architectural and interior ideas that reinforce the philosophy and identity of this project.”

Inside each elegant, light-bathed home are expansive ceilings, natural oak floorboards, and an unimposing neutral colour palette, chosen for their ability to “provide a backdrop for the owners’ personal flair,” according to Wright.

Double basins, deep-set stand-alone bathtubs, and custom-designed joinery by Jolson in neutral tones work to turn the bathrooms and en-suites into sanctuaries. Meanwhile kitchens feel expansive and generous, featuring island benches finished in chic Cȏte D’Azur marble able to double as food-prep and entertaining spaces.
