A Contemporary Home on The San Bernardino Hillside

Nestled within the foothills of the San Bernardino National Forest in Southern California, Wild Lilac by Walker Workshop derives its name from the pale violet flowers that grow on the hills surrounding it.

Despite its floral name and somewhat bucolic setting, Wild Lilac is a decidedly manmade structure. A contemporary residential home, Wild Lilac utilises a rigid shape composed of rectangular structures, whilst still being sensitive to the environment it occupies. The design features a series of thickened walls which run from east to west along the topography of the mountain site, serving to protect Wild Lilac’s interiors from the sun and establish subtle programmatic zones within the property. Each zone reinforces its connection to the nature surrounding it, while the thickened walls delineate more private areas of the house.
