The IKEA Art Event 2021 Democratises Luxury Homeware

Art for all.

Instantly recognisable furniture and homewares house IKEA has been amping up its efforts to bring luxury to the masses of late. From affordable Byredo candles to an Off-White collaboration, IKEA is no longer solely known for its flat-packed goods. Now, the Swedish company have unveiled their IKEA Art Event 2021, an initiative initially established in 2015 with the intention of democratising contemporary interior design.

The IKEA 2021 Art Event sees the Swedish homeware house collaborate with five artists and studios – Daniel Arsham, Sabine Marcelis, Stefan Marx, Gelchop, and Humans since 1982 – to bring a unique array of affordable statement pieces into its offering.

“We choose to work with different artists from around the world to reflect the diversity of art and design coming together,” said Henrik Most, Creative Leader for IKEA Art Event. “We want to show that being an artist or being a designer does not mean that you have to stay in one box, you can work within different fields, and that this new movement has had a profound impact both on the design and art scenes today.”

Consisting of ten home furnishing objects, the collection seeks to challenge the perspective on everyday objects while serving as an homage to everyday creativity. Among the designs are wall decoration lighting pieces by Sabine Marcelis, a wall clock by Daniel Arsham, a table lamp and a torch by Gelchop, a vase and a throw by Stefan Marx, and wall decorations by Humans since 1982.

“Each item in this collection has a practical function, and at the same time it is an art object. The traditional idea of art being high-end and design being part of mass culture simply is not relevant anymore,” Most explained. “The two go fantastic together – that is where the magic happens.”

The IKEA Art Event 2021 collection will be available in IKEA stores around the world in April, 2021.
