Always Sick In Spring? Here’s Why.

Naturopath Shauna Anderson breaks down why we find ourselves sniffling come springtime.

While a cold here and there is expected during the winter months, it can be baffling to find yourself sniffling as the weather warms up. Shauna Anderson, Naturopath and Whole Earth & Sea Expert, breaks down the culprit behind springtime sickness.

It’s often thought that temperature change is the direct cause of more illnesses during a seasonal change. However, a more accurate reason is that some viruses proliferate more because of the temperature shifts during this time.

Drops in temperature encourage the rhinovirus or common cold as well as influenza, while warmer temperatures induce seasonal allergies which can stress the immune system as it overcompensates, leaving a person more vulnerable to viral contagions.

Natural ways to prevent respiratory illnesses

Echinacea

Echinacea has proven time and time again to be a go-to herb when it comes to relieving symptoms of the common cold. In particular, an organic, fresh, whole-plant extract called Echinamide has been shown in several clinical trials to be particularly effective in both relieving the symptoms and reducing the duration of the common cold. The patented extraction method ensures the bioavailability of the three key plant actives in the herb Echinacea purpurea; alkylamides, cichoric acid, and polysaccharides.

Horseradish

Horseradish is also a great herb to have in your armoury during seasonal changes. This nutrient-rich herb has been shown to relieve symptoms of sinusitis, the common cold, and allergies as it increases blood circulation and helps open up the sinus cavities. Horseradish reduces certain pro-inflammatory compounds in the body due to a constituent called sinigrin. This action helps reduce symptoms of colds, flus and allergies, making recovery more comfortable.

Garlic

Allicin, a compound found in garlic works to target thiol-containing enzymes in viruses, bacteria, and certain yeasts. It is effective against a broad range of microorganisms, including some antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Marshmallow

A gentle, soothing plant, marshmallow has the ability to calm irritated, inflamed tissues. It is beneficial in making respiratory symptoms more bearable during an infection or allergy attack, making it an ideal supporting herb.
