Prada Re-Nylon Makes The Classics Sustainable

While most luxury brands have centred their offerings around premium leather goods and accessories, Prada have made a name for themselves through nylon. Sleek and contemporary, Prada have been at the forefront of the nylon-in-fashion movement, elevating a once overlooked fabric to premium status.

Though initially introduced during the 1950s under founder Mario Prada’s tenure, it was Miuccia Prada whose designs developed Prada into the brand it is today. Introduced in 1984, the Prada nylon backpack was an instant hit, transforming Prada from a stilted heritage brand into a modern, vibrant one.

“Suddenly nylon started to look more intriguing to me than couture fabrics,” Miuccia Prada said of the impetus behind using Prada’s signature fabric. “I decided to introduce it to the catwalk and it challenged, even changed, the traditional and conservative idea of luxury. I am still obsessed with it.”

Over a quarter of a century later, Prada has reinterpreted their nylon range with Re-Nylon. Originally launched in 2019 as a six bag capsule collection, Prada Re-Nylon is an eco-friendly iteration of Prada’s classic nylon, using 100% regenerated nylon materials. Acknowledging the impact of synthetic fibres on the environment, the Prada Re-Nylon collection is composed of recycled, purified nylon made from ocean plastics, fishing nets, landfills, and textile fibre waste.

With an extended offering in 2020,  the Prada Re-Nylon now includes men’s and women’s ready-to-wear, bags, shoes, and accessories. Ready-to-wear pieces include dresses, skirts, crop tops, jackets and coats in sportswear silhouettes.

The collection is available on the Prada webstore.
