Borrowed From The Boys; The Best Clothes To Buy From The Menswear Department

You don’t have to be in a committed relationship to rock a boyfriend shirt.

From crisp oxford shirts to slouchy hoodies, the boys know how to strike the balance between stylish and comfortable. While the womenswear department has its own iterations of the same pieces, the key difference between them and the ones found in the menswear department lies in the fit; for example, women’s button-down shirts typically come with stitched seams running down the ribcage, which work to make them appear more fitted (and also more dated). Another key factor is price and quality, with similar items often being more cost-effective and produced from higher quality materials (i.e. wool vs polyester) when purchased from the menswear department.

While stealing your boyfriend’s hoodie the morning after is one way to populate your wardrobe with menswear essentials, you no longer have to be in a committed relationship to rock a boyfriend shirt. Here’s our Albert Review approved guide to navigating the menswear department.

1. Oxford shirts

A staple in every decently dressed man’s wardrobe since the 1800s, it’s safe to say that the menswear department has perfected the art of the oxford shirt. A crisp boyfriend shirt is a wardrobe must-have for every well-dressed woman, exuding stylish insouciance. While there are several womenswear brands that cater to the style, opting for a menswear shirt offers more options in terms of colour and style, and is often more cost-effective too. Plus, there’s no chance of those aforementioned annoying stitched seams coming into play, making for a more relaxed, flattering fit.

2. Knitwear

While the womenswear department will always be a go-to for streamlined cardigans and cropped knits, the men’s section has the oversized sweater look nailed. Another key drawing point? When it comes to knitwear, the comparatively limited style choices translate to there being more budget for materials, which is why you’ll often find women’s poly-blended sweaters and men’s woollen or cashmere sweaters being sold at similar price points. Size down for a fitted option or stick to your usual size for a slightly oversized look.

3. Tuxedo jacket

Not quite ready to invest in the signature YSL Le Smoking jacket? No matter, a men’s tuxedo jacket emanates the same sense of cool. Get it tailored if necessary and pair with jeans or slim-cut trousers.

4. T-shirts

For boxy t-shirt styles that actually come with adequate sleeve lengths, buying t-shirts in the menswear department is a no brainer. Look for bamboo or cotton varieties with scoop or crew necks (as men’s v-neck t-shirts are typically too shallow to be flattering for women).

5. Hoodies

Duh. One of the most coopted menswear styles for women, hoodies from the menswear department fit better and often have a better fabric composition than their womenswear counterparts (think cosy fleece vs itchy terry cloth). Get a super oversized version to wear around the house, or opt for a slightly oversized variety worn under a blazer or winter coat to go out-and-about in.

6. Blazers

Women’s blazers are typically slightly cinched at the back, giving them a more slender shape, whereas menswear blazers feature a straight-cut silhouette, making them ideal for nailing the oversized blazer trend. Try beige, camel, and plaid varieties styled over hoodies, turtlenecks, or oxford shirts and jeans.

7. Boxer shorts

Perfect for hanging out around the house, men’s boxer shorts in cotton or silk make a comfortable alternative to athleisure or pyjamas.
