As you may have guessed, the Chanel x Axe collab isn’t an official one, rather the latest statement from MSCHF, a Brooklyn-based design collective known for their viral releases. From Birkenstocks made from discarded Hermes bags to the soles of Nike Air Max 97s filled with holy water from the River Jordan, MSCHF is no stranger to putting their unique twist on much-lauded products.
Commenting on the infamy of certain scents, MSCHF points out that both Chanel N°5 and Axe body spray are omnipresent in American culture. “‘Iconic’ is in no way synonymous with ‘good’, and in the fragrance world, Axe deserves the label as much as Chanel,” says MSCHF of the release. At the end of the day, where icons are concerned, there is no good or bad; there is merely visible and invisible.
“It is culture, not price, nor exclusivity, that makes icons.”
