Honey, I Ate The Birkin! Hermès Goes Raw With New Vegetable Birkin Bags

Cucumber couture.

At last, Hermès has produced vegan-friendly Birkin bags. Unfortunately they may be digested before they make it to your doorstep. Created in collaboration with American artist and designer Ben Denzer, the Hermès Birkin bags see calfskin leather swapped for actual vegetables. Fresh asparagus, cucumber, and cabbage were used to produce the French maison’s iconic Birkin bag – complete with little vegetable skin Birkin padlocks.

Due to their edible nature, the bags won’t be making their way into Hermès stores, with the maison simply sharing the images on their instagram alongside a vague caption reading: “Enjoy the detour as classic Hermès bags inspire art good enough to eat.”

The edible Birkins follow Hermès’ first foray into the world of sustainable materials; earlier this year the luxury French fashion house teamed up with start-up MycoWorks to release its Victoria bag in mushroom leather. The mushroom textiles were used alongside calfskin and canvas elements, making for a potentially sustainable – but not vegetarian or vegan – luggage option. It’s unclear whether Hermès’ collaboration with Ben Denzer could be hinting at the exploration of more plant-based textiles, or is merely a funky way to bulk up their instagram feed.
