Halpern Pirouettes Into London Fashion Week, Enlisting the Royal Ballet For Halpern SS22 Ready-To-Wear

For Halpern SS22 Ready-To-Wear, designer Michael Halpern took leaps and bounds; eschewing a traditional physical runway in favour of a digital presentation starring members of the Royal Ballet to model his latest collection.

Shot in the Royal Opera House in London, the film features Royal Ballet and Birmingham Royal Ballet wearing a collection made specifically with the collaboration in mind. The film opens with the cast – including Fumi Kaneko, Sumina Sasaki, Marianna Tsembenhoi, Leticia Dias, Katharina Nikelski, Céline Gittens, Sae Maeda, and Marcelino Sambé – stretching and gearing up for their performance in sequined gowns and voluminous tied dresses; a somewhat avant-garde take on classic ballerina tutus.

An exploration of movement through somewhat confining garments, standout pieces from Halpern SS22 Ready-To-Wear include a bulbous transparent orb dress adorned with crystals and stuffed with multicoloured feathers; a floor-length hooded pink and orange silk gown; bauble-like fluffy dresses; tiered dresses exclusively composed of multicoloured fringing; and a particularly striking yet elegantly understated dress with a green silk bodice and white tulle skirt.

“We admire the extraordinary discipline and determination by these elite performers during lockdown,” wrote Halpern on Instagram. “Halpern welcomes you back with love and awe.”
