Australian hair styling brand Mermade Hair has simplified the process of getting…well, mermaid hair. The unique three-barrel system provides a fuss-free alternative to traditional single-pronged hair curling wands.
Unlike conventional hair wands that require you to wrap your hair around a single barrel, the Mermade Hair range works by simply clamping down on sections of the hair with the triple-barreled tool, cutting styling time down by more than half. And while the Mermade Hair tools work like the crimpers that reigned supreme in the 90s and early 2000s, the result is big, lush curls or mermaid-esque waves.
The original Mermade Hair Deep Waver features a 32mm barrel size, working well for those with longer hair lending itself well to creating bouncy glamorous curls or loose beachy waves. For shorter hair or those wanting a smaller wave, the new Mermade Hair Mini Pro Waver is the way to go. As a recent convert to the short side, I opted for the Mini Waver; with a 25mm barrel size, it promises smaller, slightly tighter waves than the original.
Despite its seemingly intimidating triple-barreled appearance, the Mermade Hair Mini Pro Waver is surprisingly straightforward to use. The mini iteration is easy to hold in one hand, simplifying the process of waving the back of your hair. To use the Mermade Hair triple-barrel crimping iron, you simply press down on the handle to open up the barrels, insert a section of hair and clamp down for around ten seconds before releasing and repeating down the section of hair.
As someone with fine, thin hair, it took around 15-minutes to achieve a waved effect. My hair can be difficult to style and tends to fall straight and flat regardless of the treatment it receives, so I wasn’t expecting the same tight curls that the Mermade Hair models sport. However, coupled with a little styling cream, my hair managed to hold a light, effortless wave for the entirety of the day.
