The Ordinary Wants To Make Sulphates Great Again With New Haircare Line

Here to disrupt your haircare routine & preconceived notions.

Anti-sulphates? The Ordinary is looking to change that. Come 22nd February, affordable and transparent beauty brand The Ordinary is stepping up its game with the launch of a streamlined range of haircare products. While this isn’t the brand’s first foray into the haircare category (The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Serum for Hair Density launched a few years ago), this marks their first comprehensive offering, comprising a shampoo, conditioner, and scalp treatment.

“Maintaining optimal scalp health by protecting the skin’s barrier alongside effective cleansing and moisturising is very important and we are able to achieve this with minimal ingredients tailored to target specific hair and scalp needs,” explained Prudvi Kaka, chief scientific officer at DECIEM, of the release. “With our hair care launches, we are providing solutions that can be combined together to offer cleansing, conditioning, and hydration, but can also be used as standalone products.”

The Ordinary Wants To Make Sulphates Great Again With New Haircare Line

In line with their ingredient-led, science-focused approach, The Ordinary is spotlighting a much-maligned ingredient: sulphates. DECIEM, the parent company to The Ordinary, has long worked to provide clarity on ingredients that may have been unfairly shunned by the ‘clean beauty’ movement. “Sulphates offer superior cleansing ability, great sensorial profiles, are readily biodegradable, and do not disrupt the skin barrier when formulated properly,” says The Ordinary on their decision to use the controversial ingredient.

Taking a three-pronged approach to haircare, here’s what The Ordinary is launching.

The Ordinary Sulphate 4% Cleanser for Hair & Body

Cheekily highlighting an ingredient many consumers deliberately eschew, The Ordinary Sulphate 4% Cleanser for Hair & Body utilises a Sodium Laureth Sulphate-2, a biodegradable surfactant that ensures a thorough cleanse without impacting the integrity of the hair. While sulphates have been deemed by some as too strong and stripping for the hair, they are effective at removing product buildup. The Ordinary uses a low concentration (4%) of sulphates to cleanse without irritation.

The Ordinary Behentrimonium Chloride 2% Conditioner

The hero of this formula, behentrimonium chloride, was selected for its ability to condition and soften hair without imparting any heaviness post-wash. Ideal for those with fine, thin, or limp hair, The Ordinary Behentrimonium Chloride 2% Conditioner claims to improve “the feel and appearance of hair with immediate use.”

The Ordinary Natural Moisturising Factors + HA

Taking a skincare-esque approach to haircare, The Ordinary Natural Moisturising Factors + HA works to improve scalp hydration and provide skin barrier protection without causing stickiness or heaviness. Deriving inspiration from the ever-popular The Ordinary Natural Moisturising Factors + HA moisturiser, the haircare formula is a water-light, milky serum that hydrates and protects the outer layers of the scalp, promoting healthier hair.

The Ordinary haircare range is priced from $12.80-21.80 AUD and is available in USA & Canada from 22nd February and globally from 8th March 2022 via the DECIEM webstore.
