N°1 de Chanel Sees The French Luxury House Delve Into Clean Beauty

Clean beauty just got a new it girl in the form of N°1 de Chanel. The launch marks the French luxury fashion house’s first foray into the world of clean beauty, with a nine-piece line of skincare, makeup, and fragrance essentials crafted from sustainably sourced botanical ingredients and housed in eco-conscious packaging. The piece de resistance at the heart of the N°1 de Chanel collection is the camellia flower, a bloom that’s inextricably linked with both Chanel and the life of its founder Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel.

Rumour has it that Coco Chanel’s lover Arthur “Boy” Capel presented her with a bouquet of camellias towards the beginning of their courtship, cementing her love for the flowers. Today, the camellia is one of Chanel’s most preeminent motifs, appearing on handbags, rendered in gold and diamonds on jewellery, distilled into perfume, and on dresses.

Now, N°1 de Chanel harnesses the power of red camellia flowers, tapping into its ability to support skin vitality by addressing the first stage of skin ageing and provide antioxidant protection against free radical damage. The result of almost a decade of research, the decision to use red camellia partially lay in its concentration of protocatechuic acid, an antioxidant unseen in other camellias that may aid in forestalling the onset of senescence, a biological process wherein ageing skin cells fail to divide regularly, leading to signs of ageing like dullness, dryness, wrinkles, and skin laxity.

“N°1 de Chanel offers an innovative, global and sustainable approach to beauty, combining skincare, makeup and a fragrance mist,” the brand says in a press release. “This new line, with sensorial textures, preserves the radiance of youthful looking skin by supporting sources of vitality. At the heart of its innovative formulas lies the camellia, Gabrielle Chanel’s emblematic flower.”

Touted as “a new generation of anti-ageing skincare that preserves the look of skin’s vitality,” each formula contains up to 97% natural ingredients, with an emphasis on camellia derivatives like camellia water and oil. The eco-conscious packaging makes use of refillable glass jars, bio-based plastics, recyclable cardboard, and organic ink. Additionally, single-use plastics are minimised, with Chanel omitting the traditional paper leaflets and cellophane included.

The range consists of the Red Camellia Revitalizing Serum, Red Camellia Revitalizing Serum-in-Mist, Red Camellia Revitalizing Lotion, Red Camellia Powder-to-Foam Cleanser, Red Camellia Revitalizing Eye Cream, Red Camellia Revitalizing Cream, Red Camellia Revitalizing Foundation (20 shades), Red Camellia Revitalizing Lip and Cheek Balm (six shades), and L’Eau Rouge Fragrance Mist.

The collection is available via the Chanel webstore, with prices ranging from $75 to $165 AUD.
