Still Haven’t Found A Fave Face Oil? Try One Of These Next Level Lightweight Formulas

The opinions on face oils tend to oscillate from one end of the spectrum to the other, with aficionados touting them as a panacea for almost every skincare woe while others steering clear for fear of making oily skin, well, oilier.

However, even oily skin can benefit from a face oil. Acne-prone and oily skin types are often treated with harsh products that strip the skin of its natural oils. However, this is counterproductive as it causes the skin to overcompensate for the reduction of oils in the skin and produce excess sebum, thus leading to more congestion. Meanwhile, the right (read: non-comedogenic) face oil can aid in strengthening your skin barrier and prevents your skin from producing excess sebum.

If you’re yet to find the right face oil, look to one of these new lightweight formulas.

1. Alpha-H Golden Haze Face Oil

From the brand famed for its glycolic acid products, the Alpha-H Golden Haze Face Oil combines nine botanical oils to create a restorative formula designed to plump the skin and enhance skin barrier function. Jojoba oil shares the same molecular structure as healthy human skin, working to enhance the lipid barrier without causing breakouts. Meanwhile, squalane and oils like watermelon seed, camellia seed, rosehip, and seabuckthorn berry provide nourishment in the form of fatty acids and antioxidants.

Price: $74.95AUD

What we think
We’ve long been fans of Alpha-H’s Liquid Gold and Clear Skin Tonic formulas, so had high hopes for their first foray into face oils. Fortunately, the Alpha-H Golden Haze Face Oil didn’t disappoint; it’s a slightly thicker oil but spreads easily and has a non-greasy finish and sinks into the skin quickly. We found it quickly got rid of dry patches around the nose and cheeks during winter; we like mixing it with moisturiser and applying before bed, or even over skincare (but before sunscreen) during the day in the cooler months.
What we like
Fast-absorbing and non-greasy
Skin looks noticeably softer and more moisturised the morning after application
What we don’t like
Might be slightly too rich for daytime use in the summer
Some people may desire a more glowy finish from a face oil

2. Youth To The People Superberry Hydrate + Glow Oil

With a positively delicious berry scent and a rapidly absorbed consistency, the Youth to The People Superberry Hydrate + Glow Oil is a delight to use. Antioxidant-rich maqui, acai, and goji berries are the hero of this formula, sitting in a lush formula of squalane and sunflower and jojoba oils.

Price: $83AUD

What we think
This is one of our favourite face oils. The berry scent is unmatched — sweet (but not unnaturally so) and comforting, yet delicate enough to not be overpowering. It’s one of the most lightweight formulas on this list, absorbs quickly, and leaves a subtle dewy glow behind.
What we like
Amazing scent
Lightweight texture, weightless feeling on skin, fast-absorbing
Glowy, non-greasy finish
Suitable for all skin types
What we don’t like
Some online reviewers have reported experiencing (tiny white papules) after using this oil

3. Jurlique Rare Rose Face Oil

best face oils for oily skin

Jurlique’s signature rare rose extract meets olive, jojoba, soybean, carrot, and castor oils in this silky-smooth face oil. Ideal for those who like their skincare with a sensory element, it has a luxurious rose scent while promoting softer and more supple skin.

Price: $68AUD

What we think
Infused with Jurlique’s rare rose extract, this is another beautiful smelling oil that we genuinely look forward to using. It’s lightweight (yet slightly richer than the Youth To The People iteration) and sinks into the skin without leaving any greasy or filmy residue behind. We find the mix of squalane, jojoba, and castor oils more effective at moisturising the skin than a single-oil formulation.
What we like
Beautiful rose scent, elegant sensory experience
Nourishing mix of plant oils
Skin feels noticeably softer and more supple after use
What we don’t like
Can’t think of anything — we love it!

4. kit: Skinkind Face Oil

best face oils for oily skin

Formulated with modern skin in mind, the kit: Skinkind Face Oil works to soothe and destress the skin with a combination of fatty acids and adaptogens. Sweet almond, macadamia, holy basil, and jojoba oils restore tired skin, while a naturally derived herbaceous scent grounds the mind.

Price: $42AUD

What we think
This rich face oil is a heavy hitter, with the combination of cold pressed sweet almond, macadamia, and jojoba oils contributing to a highly nourishing formula. We like to use this for gua sha as it provides a good slip and the herbal scent has a calming effect. We found this face oil well suited to mature skin, with the rich formula working to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
What we like
Despite its rich nature (thanks to the sweet almond oil), it’s absorbed by the skin quickly
Nourishing mix of plant oils
Good for gua sha
What we don’t like
Essential oils may irritate some skin types
Some people may find the herbal scent overpowering

5. Mecca Max Daily Drop

best face oils for oily skin

Ultra-lightweight and suitable for all skin types, Mecca Max Daily Drop is a simple face oil that contains squalane and vitamin E which condition and lock in hydration, as well as vitamin C to brighten.

Price: $28AUD

What we think
The Mecca Max Daily Drop is the only face oil on this list to incorporate an active ingredient, with the formula featuring vitamin C which helps brighten skin and reduce dark spots. While we like the affordable price point and the fact that it works without clogging pores, we found this face oil left a slight filmy residue behind when used on its own.
What we like
Incorporates vitamin C for brightening
Squalane and vitamin E leave the skin feeling more moisturised after application
Very lightweight
What we don’t like
Vitamin C might irritate sensitive skin
Leaves residue on skin, doesn’t completely absorb

FAQ

What does a face oil do?

Face oils have emollient and occlusive properties, and work by providing moisture and locking hydration into the skin, sitting on the surface of the epidermis and acting as a protective seal. As they’re not humectants (i.e. they can’t pull moisture from the surrounding environment into the skin), they don’t provide hydration and therefore should be used on top of hydrating ingredients such as panthenol, hyaluronic acid, and glycerin.

Which step should face oil be in a skincare routine?

Due to the emollient and occlusive nature of face oils, lightweight water-based serums are unable to penetrate past them. This means that face oils should be applied after your serums and before or after your moisturiser. Whether you choose to apply a face oil before or after your moisturiser is dependant on personal preference as well as the formulas you’re using. However, lightweight face oils are best applied before thicker/richer creams or lotions.

Do face oils reduce wrinkles and fine lines?

Fine lines and wrinkles can become more pronounced when the skin is dry. The right face oil works to moisturise the skin, reducing dryness and plumping the skin, in turn reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Face oils can also help lock in moisture, slowing down the ageing process by protecting the skin barrier from moisture loss.
