Naturally, the beauty of the British brand’s home fragrance line transcends the olfactory realm. Founded by Sir Paul Smith over half a century ago, the British brand’s ‘classic with a twist’ ethos is applied to every piece it releases. Adding to the brand’s home category — which already includes cushions, blankets, and towels — the home fragrance lineup draws from Smith’s most treasured memories and is housed in collectible two-tone glass vessels that embody the designer’s love of colour and bold design.

Comprising candles and diffusers, the Paul Smith home fragrance collection spans four distinct scents. Each scent has been conceived and crafted by two IFF (International Flavors and Fragrances) perfumers Céline Barel and Meabh McCurtin, in keeping with the unmistakable Paul Smith sensibility.

Botanist draws from the clean-cut tailoring at Smith’s first Nottingham shop, translated through freshly cut grass and greenery with notes of vetiver, moss, and lemon; while Bookworm recalls stacks of papers and books in the designer’s office through warm notes of pimento berry, grapefruit, and cedarwood.

Early Bird is redolent of the reclaimed iron railings at Smith’s London workshop, recreating the scent of rain falling on the pavement through notes of patchouli oil, iris, and rain accord. Finally, Daydreamer evokes cycling through sunny fields and walled herb gardens experienced on long summer vacations through French lavender oil, clary sage, and verbena.

“The journey I’ve been on to create the fragrances for my first ever candle and diffuser collection has been a fascinating one, guided by some incredible perfumiers,” says Sir Paul Smith, founder of his eponymous brand. “I have really enjoyed the process of working with Meabh and Céline and it gave me the chance to reflect on some of my favourite memories, moments, and places in a new way. The creative process didn’t end with the fragrance, I was always very keen to place a lot of focus and time on the design of the vessels themselves. I really enjoy the combination of colour and light in the containers, and I hope that they will become keepsakes in their own right.”

Each candle and diffuser comes in a vessel designed with reuse in mind; a vase for the diffuser and a jar for the candles. Both the diffusers and candles come with a lid in a complementary colour that doubles as a coaster to protect surfaces from heat and spills. The interaction between light and colour was key when designing the striking vessels which, when lit, will subtly recall Paul Smith’s signature stripe.

Each scent is available as either a single-wick 240g candle ($127AUD), triple-wick 1kg candle ($438AUD) or 250ml reed diffuser ($185AUD).

The Paul Smith home fragrance collection is now available via the Mecca webstore and in select physical stores.
