Champagne Papi Is Bringing His Whiskey To Australia

There’s often a stark dichotomy when it comes to celebrity liquor, particularly when it comes to spirits. Drinks either seem to take their founders from super to super-rich like George Clooney’s Casamigos Tequila (which recently sold for a not-so-shabby $1billion) and Ryan Reynolds’ Aviation Gin, or are best kept far away from your bar cart and never spoken of again, à la Robert De Niro’s almost painful VDKA 6100 and Pitbull’s Voli 305 Vodka.

However, Virginia Black, the tipple co-founded by Drake, seems to be solidly on the Clooney and Reynolds route. A collaboration between the Canadian artist and Brent Hocking, founder and the original Deleón tequila, Virginia Black is a blend of a curated collection of two, three, and four-year-old bourbon whiskeys, with a particular focus on a high-rye content. Designed to be enjoyed neat or on the rocks, Virginia Black is described as having tasting notes of honeyed cherries, rich vanilla, and oak, along with hints of toffee, orange peel, and baking spice.

“We believe everyone should have access to glamour, swagger and soul,” said Drake on the launch of Virginia Black. “Virginia Black grants them that access, allowing people to embody the lifestyle always, not just on special occasions.”

Spurning the traditional aesthetic associated with whiskey, Virginia Black is housed in a two-toned black and gold glass bottle emblazoned with a gold plaque, resembling a fragrance bottle more than a whiskey one. Inspired by the art deco era of the 1920s, the impetus was to create a bottle that both appealed to women and was something people would like to showcase on their bar cart.

Heading to Australian shores for the first time, Virginia Black will be exclusively available through new online liquor store BevMart later this month.
