Montblanc & Ferrari Celebrate The Daytona SP3 With A $39k Fountain Pen

Both design icons in their own right, Ferrari and Montblanc have once again teamed up to pay homage to the former’s automotive designs. Co-designed under the direction of Flavio Manzoni, chief design officer at Ferrari, the new Montblanc Ferrari Stilema SP3 nods to the 2021 Ferrari Daytona SP3.

While the previous collaboration between Montblanc and Ferrari paid tribute to the Italian marque’s heritage through thoughtful use of colour and decorative touches, the Montblanc Ferrari Stilema SP3 reimagines the architecture of the writing instrument itself through an automotive lens. Drawing from the Ferrari design language, the Montblanc Ferrari Stilema SP3 takes on an entirely new shape, embodying the architecture and proportions, surfaces, volumes, and aerodynamics that make every Ferrari vehicle recognisable. This design DNA is known as a ‘stilema’ in Italian and refers to the signature design elements in an object that reveal its identity and creator.

Crafted from light titanium, the Montblanc Ferrari Stilema SP3 uses an angled cap top to mimic the nose of the Ferrari Daytona SP3, while the lined accents on the barrel and front of the pen draw from the language of the blades on the car’s bumpers.

While the Ferrari Daytona SP3 has petrol running through its veins, the Montblanc Ferrari Stilema SP3 — naturally — runs off ink. A red, semi-transparent blade slashes through the titanium barrel and is pulled back to reveal the inner mechanism of the ink well, which is crafted from solid white gold (as is the nib of the pen). Once the mechanism has been filled, the red blade is locked back into place and the Montblanc Ferrari Stilema SP3 is ready to write.

“It was a fascinating design challenge to translate the proportions and fluidity of the Daytona SP3, ideally contoured for dynamic performance and incredible speeds, to a writing instrument without sacrificing the quality of the writing experience,” explains Flavio Manzoni, chief design officer at Ferrari. “Our focus was not only on the fluidity of the form but also on function, emphasizing the exceptional sensation of holding a high-calibre fountain pen. Not only is the ink fluid, but the pen supports the rapid movements of the hand as it writes, allowing thoughts to flow unimpeded.”

Limited to just 599 pieces, the Montblanc Ferrari Stilema SP3 is priced at a casual $27,000USD (approx. $39,000AUD), a price befitting the Ferrari brand.
