Selected by master blender Dr Craig Wilson, the Legends Untold collection derives inspiration from ancient myths wherein otherworldly beings protected the remote heartlands that are home to several notable Scottish distilleries. A nod to the hidden gems that can be found in each corner of the vast Scottish terrain, the Diageo 2021 Special Releases Single Malt Scotch Whisky Collection highlights the diversity of some of the most treasured whisky reserves maturing in Scotland.

Whiskies from Cardhu, Royal Lochnagar, Glendullan, Oban, Mortlach, Talisker, and Lagavulin showcase the diverse palette of Scotland’s finest distilleries. “Taking inspiration from this year’s mythical creatures, we have revealed new depths of flavour and embraced the essence of each whisky’s unique profile, unveiling the legend it brings to life,” said Wilson of the releases.

Each whisky is paired with a mythical creature, with augmented reality forming a key element of the Legends Untold offering. A QR code on each bottle unlocks the legend of that whisky region, creating a multi-sensory experience for whisky lovers. The bottles themselves are equally as striking as the whiskies they house, featuring illustrations by Melbourne-based digital illustrator Ken Taylor, who has lent his signature style to the likes of Metalica and Florence and the Machine. Adorning the bottles are stunning illustrations of the mythical creatures that inspired them, depicted with Taylor’s pop-culture flair.

Highlights of the collection include the delightfully briny, smoky Talisker 8-Year-Old and the sweet yet somewhat mellow Royal Lochnagar 16-Year-Old. However, with such a diverse range of distilleries, there’s something for every taste.
