Looking towards an electric future, Nissan has unveiled the Ariya Single Seater Concept. Displaying how the all-electric Nissan Ariya road car powertrain can be adapted for use in a bespoke single-seater racing car chassis, the concept car takes on a futuristic aesthetic with design elements similar to those of Formula E racing cars.

The Nissan Ariya Single Seater draws design cues from its roadworthy counterpart, the Aryia SUV. The ‘V’ shaped grille at the front is integral to Nissan’s current road car design language, while the bodywork hones in on the Ariya’s streamlined nature, prioritising efficient surfaces in carbon fibre. The striking black-and-copper colour palette is similar to that of the Ariya SUV concept initially unveiled a few years ago. The concept car also bears many similarities to Formula E vehicles, a series in which Nissan has competed since 2018. Racing-inspired details include an open cabin, a safety ‘halo’ extending out from the bodywork, exposed suspension elements, and covered wheels.

“Nissan competes in Formula E not only to race on track, but also to support the development of compelling electric vehicles for customers,” said Tommaso Volpe, global motorsports director at Nissan. “Our EV programs inform our Formula E program and vice versa, allowing for road-to-track technology transfer as well as track-to-road. The Nissan Ariya Single Seater Concept explores the combination of the all-electric powertrain, dual motors and revolutionary all-wheel-drive system of the Ariya with a pure single-seat racing chassis – a powerful demonstration of just how thrilling electric vehicles could be.”

Power specifications were not provided, however,  the Nissan Ariya Single Seater Concept is presumably akin to that of the Ariya SUV, which boasts 398 bhp and 443 ft-lb of torque. Though it’s highly unlikely this model will ever reach production, it represents an exciting future for Nissan’s road cars, perhaps hinting at the possibility of an electric sports car or supercar in the not-too-distant future.
