Just over a month after the release of the ALD Dual Time, British watch brand Dennison is back with a new take on the travel watch. The Dennison ALD Dual Time Capsule Collection II comprises three timepieces that put a modernist spin on the split dial format.
Drawing upon the oeuvre of Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, a key figure of the Bauhaus movement, each of the ALD Dual Time Capsule Collection II timepieces is housed within the same 37mm x 35.6mm case in stainless steel and features a black onyx dial with a red, pink, or turquoise subdial on the right side.

The statement subdial acts as a Kandinsky accent, albeit in a more reductionist format than the Russian artist’s abstract paintings. Conceptualised during his time teaching at the Bauhaus school, Wassily Kandinsky developed his namesake accents based on his theories surrounding the ‘visual grammar’ of painting and the emotional and spiritual associations between specific colours and forms. Kandinsky theorised that pictorial language was universal—with certain visual elements (colours and shapes) evoking emotional associations—and began to punctuate his compositions with a single dominant colour in a geometric or biomorphic shape. These became known as Kandinsky accents.
The ALD Dual Time Capsule Collection II distils the concept of Kandinsky accents down to its essentialist form, with each timepiece acting as an exploration of the Bauhaus “form follows function” philosophy. Doing away with superfluous ornamentation, the composition of each dial is perfectly balanced, with the black onyx dial allowing the lacquered subdial to pop, resulting in an architectural statement on the wrist.
Inside, the timepieces are powered by a duo of Swiss Ronda quartz movements (one for each subdial display), with the watches available on either a black or beige leather strap or a steel mesh bracelet with a striking bark texture (always go for the bracelet. Always).
