What’s Black & White & Stainless Steel All Over? The New IWC Panda Portugieser

Swiss watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen has given its Portugieser Automatic and Portugieser Chronograph the panda treatment. While both styles are available in monochromatic iterations (including statement shades of blue, green, and red), there are several panda models available both in black-and-white and white-and-black (there’s a difference, we swear).

Respecting the maritime origins of the Portugeiser, whose design was initially inspired by marine deck observation watches, the new models are defined by clean white dials with prominent Arabic numerals, a chapter ring, feuille hands, and subdials in a deep shade of blue. The subdials feature a textured azurage finish, with their nautical colours lending the historic timepiece a contemporary appearance.

Both timepieces retain the defining characteristics of the Portugieser collection; large, uncluttered dials with legible Arabic numerals and balance subdials. The balanced dial layout of the 42.3mm Portugieser Automatic stations the small seconds subdial at 9 o’clock and the power reserve display at 3 o’clock. Visible through the sapphire glass caseback, the Portugieser Autmoatic is powered by an in-house 52010 calibre which comes with a whopping 7-day power reserve. The refined piece is enhanced by an alligator leather strap.

Meanwhile, the Portugieser Chronograph has a slightly smaller case size, at 41mm. The stainless steel timepiece features the same hallmarks as its brother, with a white-and-ble dial and blued fuille hands. However, the chronograph minutes counter is located at 12 o’clock while the small seconds is situated at 6 o’clock. The sapphire glass caseback reveals an in-house 69355 calibre manufacture with a power reserve of 46 hours. Fitted with a durable rubber strap, the Portugieser Chronograph makes for a markedly elegant sports watch.

The Portugieser Automatic and Portugieser Chronograph are available via the IWC Schaffhausen webstore and in select physical stores.
