The Ephemeral Beauty of Roses, by Nick Knight

From fashion to florals.

Acclaimed British fashion photographer Nick Knight has turned his focus from fashion to flowers. For over thirty years, Knight has captured roses in varying stages of their lifecycle, from birth to decay. Initially photographing roses from the Natural History Museum’s collections of pressed flowers, he now predominantly photographs roses from his own garden – generally with his iPhone – as part of his Roses from My Garden series.

Intricate, exquisite, and graceful, Knight’s rose compositions are works of art. Each composition has a painting-like effect, reminiscent of the Dutch greats, which is achieved by printing each photo on the wrong side of the photographic paper, resulting in a textured print that resembles an artist’s brushstrokes.
