From Catching Waves To Console Tables; Haydenshapes Creates A Furniture Collection In Collaboration With SP01

If anyone can make resin an elevated material, it’s Hayden Cox. Proposing a quintessentially antipodean take on luxury, surfboard — and recently fashion — brand Haydenshapes has collaborated with fellow Australian label SP01 on a new furniture collection.

Titled ‘Refract’, the Haydenshapes x SP01 collection comprises a console, side table, coffee tables, and surfboard sculpture, each crafted from resin. Defined by rectilinear lines and minimalist forms, the singular choice of materiality plays a crucial role in the shape, opacity, and colour selection that unites the collection.

With over two decades of experience in translating resin into aesthetically pleasing, high-performance surfboards, Cox is no stranger to taking his experience with the material out of the water. He’s previously collaborated with American contemporary artist Daniel Arsham on a series of sculptural surfboards, and recently linked up with Sydney-based architecture firm Akin Atiler on a translucent, sunset-tinged resin gallery shop within the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ Sydney Modern building.

Designed in-house and made in the Haydenshapes factory in Mona Vale, Sydney, the Haydenshapes x SP01 Refract collection derives its name from the way the resin allows light to shift and retract through each piece — in a manner the duo describes as akin to “sun through seawater.” The stacked linear shapes that form the table bases derive inspiration from a wave set, with each slab glowing at the tip and deepening in colour as the prism expands.

“The design process was an exploration of the relationship between the material and light,” says Hayden Cox, founder of Haydenshapes. “Working with intersected forms and shapes of varying thickness and transparency, each piece has been designed to uniquely interact with its space – ever changing its hue over the day and viewpoint.”
