Visually, the design of the 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale remains faithful to the concept from which it originated. Merging contemporary design elements with Alfa Romeo signatures, the 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale features the marque’s statement ‘Scudetto’ upside-down triangle grille encased between Tribolo-inspired ‘3+3’ matrix LED headlights. Developed in conjunction with Marelli, the three modules include daylight running lights, dynamic turn signals, and a ‘welcome and goodbye’ feature. Set above the ‘Tonale’ badging and a power tailgate release, the taillights take their cues from the headlights, forming a curve that wraps around the rear of the vehicle to create a striking effect.

Alloy wheels between 17” and 20” utilise the Alfa Romel five-hole telephone dial rims, while the body of the car takes on a sleek, dynamic design with a shorter, lower stance than that of the marque’s Stelvio SUV. On the inside, Alfa Romeo steps up its game, placing a sporty driving experience front and centre with a 10.25” touchscreen infotainment system paired with a fully-configurable cluster screen housed in a retro-style hooded binnacle. The cabin utilises a plethora of aluminium, contrasting against the softness of Alcantara suede and leather.

In Australia, the 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale will be available in a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, reinforced by a 48V mild-hybrid system, with PHEV systems exclusively available in Europe. However, the former mild-hybrid system differentiates itself from others of its kind, with the Tonale able to drive on electric power alone, albeit at low speeds for short distances, making it ideal for crawling in stop-start traffic.

The 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale also represents the first new consumer car to enter the metaverse, with its own non-fungible token. Each vehicle will come with an NFT digital certificate, authenticating its place as a unique item on the blockchain. “With the customer’s consent, the NFT will record vehicle data, generating a certificate that can be used to assure the car has been properly maintained, with a positive impact on its residual value,” claims Alfa Romeo. “On the pre-owned car market, NFT certification represents an additional source of credibility for owners or dealers to count on. In the meantime, buyers will be reassured in their choice of car.”
