An Electric Classic Is Born With The Hyundai Heritage Series Grandeur Restomod

Initially born out of a desire to venture into the luxury market, the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur utilised the platform, technology, and internal configuration of the Mitsubishi Debonair to create the Korean automobile company’s first-ever luxury sedan. Its clean lines and boxy silhouette solidified it as an instant hit. Now, on its 35th anniversary, the Grandeur is reborn in the form of the Hyundai Heritage Series Grandeur; a retro-futuristic restomod.

Keeping the bones (and charm) of the original Grandeur, the Hyundai Heritage Series Grandeur sees the sedan outfitted with an all-electric powertrain, while the exterior is enhanced with modern pixel LED headlights and taillights, a striking chrome mesh grille, flat wheel covers, and a clean chrome trim.

Although the exterior still gives off a retro vibe, retro-futuristic is the name of the game when it comes to the interiors. Receiving a complete overhaul, the interior of the Hyundai Grandeur Heritage Series takes on a luxurious aesthetic, combining ‘80s styling with top of the line audio and entertainment technology. The front seats are fitted with burgundy velvet, accented with laced auburn Nappa leather on the back. Infinity mirror roof lights in bronze keep the essence of the ‘80s alive, as does the use of a single-spoke steering wheel and jetplane style gear shift. Welcome touches include a hidden watch compartment in the centre console armrest and a virtual piano within the audio system which can be played when the vehicle is in park.

Thoroughly modern in its approach to technology, the Hyundai Grandeur Heritage Series comes complete with a widescreen display with an integrated soundbar as well as a panel that controls multimedia, driving functions and air conditioning. Developed in collaboration with South Korean sound designer Guk-il Yu, the soundbar works in tandem with an 18-speaker sound system designed to deliver rich sound similar to that of a concert hall.

The Heritage Series Grandeur follows a reimagining of the 1975 Pony and will be followed by other restomods in the Heritage Series. The vehicle was on display at Hyundai Motorstudio Goyang until 14th November and will be transferred to Seoul Motorstudio for viewing from 16th to 21st November.
