Ditching traditional runway showings, the Balenciaga Fall 2021 collection has debuted in the form of a video game, Afterworld: The Age of Tomorrow. The brainchild of immersive fashion show proponent Demna Gvasalia, Afterworld: The Age of Tomorrow is set in 2031, allowing players to choose their characters, with the Balenciaga Fall 2021 collection forming their armour.

Characters pass through five zones, the first of which is a colossal serpentine Balenciaga store, encountering models and garments from the Fall 2021 collection.
“The narrative of Afterworld is anchored to mythological pasts and projected futures with timeless archetypes and speculative imagery,” explained Balenciaga. “The world may appear decaying at first, but it is far from a dystopian view, showing instead the slow return to a healthier balance of nature and industry.”
The Balenciaga Fall 2021 collection features gaming references throughout, in the typical style we’ve come to expect from the luxury fashion house, with the Playstation 5 font etched up the arms of a sweatshirt and the logo found across the collection. Outerwear featured the NASA patch, while t-shirts and shirts reinforced Balenciaga’s commitment to sustainable fashion, reading “when I am done with this T-shirt, I will donate it.”
Afterworld: The Age of Tomorrow is now available to play here.
