A Blacked-Out Dial & The Return Of A Rare Tank: The Best Cartier New Watch Releases

Since its inception in 1917, there has been no shortage of the Cartier Tank. The popular rectangular case has seen numerous iterations, including the aptly-titled tilted Asymétrique, classically elegant Louis, long and dressy Cintrée, the sporty Française, and the starter Musts. However, this year marks the return of a rare gem in the Cartier Tank collection, the Cartier Privé Tank Chinoise.

Cartier Privé Tank Chinoise

The Chinoise takes on a more delicate aesthetic than the classic military-inspired Tank, with its horizontal bars drawing inspiration from the geometric porticos found atop Chinese temples. The new Cartier Privé Tank Chinoise lean further into their cultural inspirations, with two skeletonised dials showing off the movement beneath and featuring a pattern that recalls traditional Chinese windows. For lovers of the original, two classic Chinoise Tank styles retain the design language of their forebears, this time encased in gold, rose gold, and platinum.

Tank Louis Cartier

Essentially the Tank in its purest form, the Tank Louis Cartier has gotten a monochromatic makeover for 2022. Black is back in a big way, with the Tank Louis Cartier presenting in both all-black and anthracite grey dials. Taking a pared-back approach, the new watches are devoid of the classic rail track and feature just four hour markers rather than the usual twelve. For lovers of colour, there’s also a jammy red dial presented on a red strap.

Cartier Tank Must Black

While last year saw the French luxury house release a slew of colourful Tank Must watches, this year Cartier looked to align the budget-friendly Tank Must (or the baby Tank, as we like to call it) with the Tank Louis Cartier line, redesigning the timepiece to resemble it as much as possible. Clad in the classic silver vermeil case, it’s as close you can get to a Tank Louis without actually buying a Tank Louis.

Pasha de Cartier Grille

Drawing upon the design aesthetics of the ‘80s Pasha, the Pasha de Cartier Grille features a detachable grid that delineates the four oversized Arabic numerals on the dial.

Putting a sportier twist on the line, the new Pasha de Cartier watches come with options like a skeletonised dial, moonphase complication, tourbillon, and chronograph with oversized pushers.

Cartier Santos-Dumont

Retaining the key design language of the original Santos-Dumont, this year the collection adds three new models. A coat of lacquer covers the dial, in shades of burgundy, rose gold, or black.
