Following a landmark show for Dior Fall 2023 that saw creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri present her collection at Mumbai’s Gateway of India monument, the luxury French fashion house once again returns to the republic for its accompanying photographic campaign.
Shot by Dutch photographer Viviane Sassen, the campaign travels to Udaipur in Rajasthan; also known as the ‘city of lakes’ or the ‘white city’. With a veritable mélange of palaces and picturesque locations to choose from, the city of lakes forms the perfect backdrop for the opulent collection.
The vocabulary of traditional Indian dress is reflected in a series of silk silhouettes in shimmering shades, composed of knotted or straight skirts – worn with tops under coats of architectural cut – and asymmetrical dresses sublimated with virtuoso draping. Long monochrome tunics with minimalist lines, enhanced by side buttons, exalt the graphic purity of black and white.
Turning a quintessentially French eye to traditional Indian dress, Dior Fall 2023 is laden with mediumweight silks in both neutral hues and jewel tones, embroidered jackets, and patterned kaftans. The vernacular of Indian attire is expressed through silk silhouettes in knotted or straight skirts, as well as asymmetrical dresses accented with virtuoso draping. Dior’s quintessential black and white hues serve as a sartorial palate cleanser, taking shape as elegant monochromatic tunics defined by their clean, minimal lines and waist-high slits.
Elsewhere, classic outerwear receives an artisanal touch courtesy of gilded peacock embroidery, while the luxury French fashion house’s signature ‘new look’ bar jacket is repurposed for the change of scenery.
