The Hublot Classic Fusion Takashi Murakami Sapphire Rainbow Exudes Horological Flower Power

Monochrome? Never heard of her.

The second release from Hublot and Takashi Murakami, the Hublot Classic Fusion Takashi Murakami Sapphire Rainbow does a 180 from its predecessor. While the duo debuted with a black-on-black timepiece, this release once again centres around Murakami’s signature smiling flower, albeit in hues that span the entire colour spectrum.

A 45mm transparent sapphire crystal case serves as the canvas for Murakami’s smiling flower, which comprises twelve petals crafted from 487 gemstones in every colour of the rainbow; rubies, pink sapphires, amethysts, blue sapphires, tsavorites, yellow, and orange sapphires. The incorporation of a ball-bearing system developed in-house by Hublot works to turn the petals under the watch crystal, bringing the smiling flower to life. At the heart of the watch sits a HUB1214 calibre, with a power reserve of 72-hours.

“This partnership with Hublot has enabled me to express my creativity in what is a totally new medium for me,” said artist Takashi Murakami. “The mastery of the watchmaker’s technicians has opened up new fields of possibilities for my inspiration. The result is this new watch in the colours of the rainbow.”

Available in a limited-edition release of 100 pieces via the Hublot webstore, the Hublot Classic Fusion Takashi Murakami Sapphire Rainbow is priced at $106,000 USD ($149,000 AUD).
