The Dyson Supersonic Flyaway Attachment Is The Key To Smooth Locks Sans Extreme Heat

Salon fresh hair at home.

There’s nothing quite like that salon-fresh finish. Regardless of how much time we dedicate to nailing that perfect blow-dry; clutching a hairdryer with one hand while wielding a round brush with the other, the result never seems to come close to emulating that inimitable smooth salon finish. Plus, there’s the issue of flyaways; those pesky little baby hairs that seem to pop up no matter how much heavy-duty hairspray you employ.

Now, Dyson has proposed an innovative solution in the form of a new hair tool. Designed to be attached to the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer, the Dyson Supersonic Flyaway Attachment works to eliminate flyaways without the use of extreme heat.

Employing Dyson’s revolutionary Coanda effect, the air technology initially engineered for styling with the Dyson Airwrap, the Dyson Supersonic Flyaway Attachment utilises airflow to attract and lift longer hairs to the front while pushing shorter flyaways under longer hair so they aren’t visible, making for a smoother, more even effect.

When it comes to developing a Dyson product, there are no shortcuts taken. By observing and analysing over 1.14 billion pieces of professional styling data from 420 stylists across 80 salons around the world, Dyson engineers were able to identify the best way to tackle flyaways. While in salons, stylists smooth hairs by using a round brush and blow dryer, those styling their hair at home often turned to high heat solutions like straighteners with fixed plates, exposing the hair to unnecessary additional heat and increasing the risk of breakage (and thus, more flyaways).

“Our engineers are driven to rethink convention and our obsession with airflow led us to push the potential of Coanda after observing how stylists use a ‘brush and blow dryer’ technique to smooth flyaways. Traditionally, this skilled technique involves the stylist using a round brush to section and manage the hair, whilst directing airflow from the dryer to push the flyaways into the style and out of sight,” said Emma Sheldon, category director at Dyson Hair Care. “We set out to find a way to innovate a way to mechanize this method for the everyday styler. The new Dyson Supersonic Flyaway attachment harnesses the phenomenon of Coanda to smooth flyaways out of sight, without exposing the hair to extreme heat damage.”

Designed to be used on dry hair, the Dyson Supersonic Flyaway Attachment twists onto the Supersonic Hair Dryer. Unlike the round brush and blow dryer duo employed by professional stylists, the Flyaway Attachment only requires one hand, making it ideal for self-stylers. Simply start at the top of your head; once you feel your strands gently wrap around the attachment (due to the Coanda effect), run the attachment down your hair for effortlessly smooth, flyaway-free locks.

The Dyson Supersonic Flyaway Attachment is now included with all purchases of the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer ($599AUD). For those who already have a Dyson, the attachment is available separately for $99AUD on the Dyson webstore

FAQ

How does the Dyson Supersonic Flyaway Attachment work?

The new Dyson Supersonic Flyaway Attachment uses Coanda technology first established for styling with the Dyson Airwrap. The Coanda effect works by attracting and lifting longer hairs to the front, while pushing shorter flyaways underneath, resulting in a smooth, even finish.
