Ferrari Shifts Gears With First-ever V6, The Hybrid 296 GTB

Ferrari seems to be switching lanes of late, first with the introduction of their inaugural fashion line and now with the Ferrari 296 GTB. Redefining the concept of what a Ferrari is, the Modena marque unveiled their first-ever V6, doing away with the V8 that has been so inextricably linked to the Prancing Horse DNA. Marking the production road car with a 6-cylinder engine sporting the Prancing Horse badge, the Ferrari 296 GTB is also the brand’s second hybrid model, following the SF90 Stradale (and its open-top flanker, the SF90 Spider).

Proving the latest varietal doesn’t compromise on power, the twin-turbo V6 is augmented by plug-in hybrid system, generating an impressive 818 hp, equivalent to that of the Ferrari 812 Competizione. Going from 0-100km/h in 2.9 seconds, the Ferrari 296 GTB tops out at a not too shabby 330km/h.

While the introduction of a V6 may seem like a complete 180° for Ferrari, the marque has previously produced V6 vehicles, with several iterations of the Dino – including the 196 S, 296 S, and 246 F1 – powered by a 6-cylinder. However, those cars weren’t officially considered Ferraris.

To make the most of the dynamic plug-in hybrid powertrain, the Ferrari 296 GTB comes with four driving modes, selected via the eManettino knob on the steering wheel. eDrive is purely electric, with a fully-charged battery allowing you to cover 25km with a maximum speed of 135km/h; Hybrid is the default mode, which efficiently toggles between the V^ and electric motor; Performance, which maintains battery efficiency by keeping the ICE permanently on; and Qualify, which provides maximum performance by lowering battery recharging.

Although it’s what’s on the inside that’s got everyone’s attention, the undeniable fact of the matter is that the Ferrari 296 GTB is quite simply, beautiful. With understated, elegant design cues, the Ferrari 296 GTB utilises clean lines that reflect the marque’s current design codes, while contributing to strong aerodynamics.

The Ferrari 296 GTB is set to go into production for the European market in early 2022, with the Australian launch yet to be announced.
