Moncler & Mercedes-Benz Want To Drive You To The Moon

Puff diesel.

What would happen if you put a puffer jacket on a car? Well, Moncler and Mercedes-Benz just did. Kind of.

Following the German marque’s forward-thinking Project Maybach collaboration with late designer Virgil Abloh, Mercedes-Benz has linked up with Moncler to create a futuristic concept car. Uniting the seemingly divergent product categories of automotives and puffer jackets, the resultant Project Mondo G is a unique design flex. Unveiled during Moncler’s ‘The Art of Genius’ show at London Fashion Week, it marks the first automotive collaboration for the Italian luxury fashion house.

More fit for the craters of the moon than for the streets, Project Mondo G seemingly sees the Mercedes-Benz G-Class don a Moncler puffer jacket, with the two utilitarian forms uniting to create a vehicle that’s equal parts beautiful and bizarre.

The roof and wheels of the boxy silhouette of the wagon are adorned in high-gloss reflective surfaces that take on the shape of the down-filled pillows of Moncler’s signature puffer jackets, with the angular planes of the G-Class adopting an aged, patinated finish. Meanwhile, an oversized zip extends across the entirety of the roof, finishing at the rear with branded Moncler hardware. Being that the bulbous additions are in fact composed of metal and not down, the Project Mondo G weighs in at a hefty 2.5 tons. However, Moncler and Mercedes-Benz were inspired by zero gravity when reimagining the G-Class, so the Project Mondo G’s heavy dry weight likely won’t pose a problem.

With both brands sharing a commitment to luxury and a pioneering spirit, Moncler and Mercedes-Benz work to bring “next-level comfort to even the most remote places.”

“Based on our design philosophy Sensual Purity, this art piece merges extremely contrasting forms and surfaces: spacecraft shiny materials with a used patina look; strong geometry of the G-Class with organic forms of Moncler puffer jackets,” said Gorden Wagener, chief design officer at Mercedes-Benz. “Two strong luxury brands offer an extraordinary new experience by combining the automotive and fashion worlds in one piece. Because of the over-dimensional and exaggerated language of forms, it’s polarizing art to set new impulses and trends.”
