Kim Jones Communes With The Spirit Of Christian Dior For Dior Winter 2022 Menswear

The father, the son & the holy couturier.

On the 75th anniversary of Dior, creative director Kim Jones honoured the French fashion house’s founder as well as the city that was instrumental in its formation, Paris. Taking place along the Pont Alexandre III bridge with the scent of Lily of the Valley in the air (a floral symbol close to the heart of Dior), the notes describing Dior Winter 2022 Menswear show relay that “Kim Jones engages in the ultimate conversation and association – with that of Christian Dior himself.” A dialogue with the deceased, of sorts.

“Here, the two men’s histories intertwine,” the press notes continue, “from the gradation of greys and pastels to the meeting of British masculine tailoring with that of the haute couture French tailleur in the new, rough hewn, men’s Bar silhouette.” If death isn’t a sufficient force to subdue the spirit of the late Christian Dior, who are we to complain?

Each look in the Dior Winter 2022 Menswear show reflected the passing of time, drawing upon the archives to convey a sense of romanticism that’s simultaneously modern and timeless. The 49-look collection continually referenced Dior’s storied history, but with Kim Jones’ delicate touch. The Dior Bar Jacket, a piece created by Christian Dior and unveilled in his SS 1947 collection, was reworked for several looks. Characterised by a dramatically cinched waist (‘snatched’ in today’s terms, if you will) and accompanied by a voluminous shirt, the silhouette propelled its creator and his eponymous fashion house to widespread fame and acclaim.

Not merely content with referential pieces, Jones looks to the future with the inclusion of several sportswear-inspired elements. Tailored track pants speak to the athleisure trend, albeit with a distinct sense of Dior-ness, while untucked shirts and exposed logo-adorned boxers are distinctly of our time. Meanwhile, a collaboration with utilitarian-favourite Birkenstock subtly nods to Christian Dior, as a contemporary take on the gardening shoes the designer favoured when honing in his green thumb.
