The Sold-Out Omega x Swatch MoonSwatch Mission To Moonshine Is Same Same But Different

Remember that expression ‘you don’t put a bumper sticker on a Bentley’? Well, the same thing kind of applies here in reverse. Following a teaser from Swatch with the name ‘Mission to Moonshine Gold’, speculation was rife with horologists and hypebeasts alike dreaming up possibilities of full metal golden alloys à la CasiOak and colourful dials. Instead, the resultant MoonSwatch is simply a twist on the original Mission to the Moon.

The Moonswatch Mission To Moonshine Gold sees the chronograph seconds hand coated in a layer of Omega Moonshine Gold, the Swiss watch manufacturer’s own gold alloy that debuted in 2019. The 18k gold alloy is composed of 75% gold as well as silver and copper, the latter of which lends it its signature pale hue.

As the 12th addition to the highly covetable MoonSwatch line, the Mission To Moonshine Gold takes on the same specifications as its predecessors. Made from bioceramic — a hard-wearing material produced by combining ceramic with plastics made from the oil of caster beans — it closely resembles the original Omega Speedmaster that the line pays homage to. The timepiece features blacked-out subdials which allow the single Moonshine Gold hand to pop.

For those who like both horology and astrology, the particular bath of Moonshine Gold used on each seconds hand was produced under a full moon during the month of February; a fact which is documented in the production certificate that comes with each MoonSwatch Mission to Moonshine Gold. Like previous MoonSwatches, Mission to Moonshine Gold is not available online; with purchase possible in London, Milan, Tokyo, and Zürich. The cities selected for the exclusive release were chosen for their affiliation with gold — Zürich is known for its gold banks and reserves, while London is the location where the global price of gold is fixed.

While the Moonswatch Mission To Moonshine Gold isn’t technically a limited edition release, it was only available for purchase in person on the 7th of March. As for how many were actually produced? According to Swatch, “not enough.” Helpful.

Here’s hoping for another full moon.
