Rolex Brings Back The ‘Paul Newman’ Daytona

In a luxe white gold edition.

Rolex revs up to celebrate the 100th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the most fitting way possible — with a commemorative Daytona Cosmograph. Based on the updates references introduced at this year’s Watches & Wonders, the commemorative Rolex Daytona features unique visual and technical cues that reference the 100th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The 40mm case of the celebratory release is crafted from 18k white gold and plays host to a reverse panda dial (black with white counters in a tricompax layout). The dial aesthetic references that of the Daytona 6263; most notable for being bestowed pride of place on the wrist of actor and race car driver Paul Newman. The tachymeter scale on the black ceramic bezel sees the number ‘100’ receive the red treatment, in a nod to the race’s centenary. This is complemented by the red ‘Daytona’ text bordering the seconds counter at 6 o’clock. Like the current-gen model, the Rolex Le Mans Cosmograph Daytona is presented on an Oyster bracelet.

Notably, the Rolex Le Mans Cosmograph Daytona receives a space-specific technical upgrade in the form of an exclusive calibre. The calibre 4132 allows for a 24-hour chronograph measure, up from the 12 hours of the standard calibre 4131, which would only get through half of the endurance race. The exhibition caseback showcases the automatic movement, which is decorated with Côtes de Genève on the bridges and features an 18k yellow gold oscillating weight.
