In a post-Karl Lagerfeld world, Chanel seems to be trying new things. In a career first, Juergen Teller has shot the Chanel Metiers d’Art 2021 campaign, starring longtime Chanel ambassador Kristen Stewart. Known for his *ahem* unique work that aims to question the notions of fame (including a particularly controversial W Magazine shoot that saw the likes of George Clooney, Tessa Thompson, and Michelle Phifer photographed in mundane, nondescript locations), Teller retains his humbling style of photography while shooting for the French luxury fashion house.

Shot against what may well be one of the most dreary areas of the Loire Valley in France, a region known for its lush vineyards and fine wineries, Kristen Stewart sports the Chanel Le Château des Dames. Notably, Stewart was the only guest invited to the showing of the Chanel Métiers d’Art Collection in December last year, which sparked rumours of a campaign in the works.
Stark and bleak, Teller’s signature style is a definitive pivot from the normally refined, polished images we’re accustomed to seeing from Chanel. Tweed skirt suits and sheer dresses stand in stark juxtaposition to the moss-covered stone walls and trees devoid of foliage that provide the background.
