Stella McCartney Is Set To Launch First-Ever Mushroom Leather Bag

British designer Stella McCartney has been championing ethical fashion long before ‘sustainability’ became a buzzword. Now, through her eponymous fashion house, Stella McCartney is set to launch the world’s first commercial mushroom leather bag, set to go on sale on the 1st of July.

Initially debuted during Paris Fashion Week last year, the Stella McCartney Frayme Mylo bag is created in collaboration with Californian material solutions company Bolt Threads, creators of mushroom ‘Mylo’ leather. Inspired by the signature Stella McCartney Falabella tote bag, the Frayme Mylo takes on a crescent moon silhouette and is encircled by an oversized aluminium chain that forms the handle of the clutch. The Frayme Mylo will be available in black upon its release, with new colours to be introduced in the future. The bag will initially be introduced in a 100 piece run, with Stella McCartney planning to integrate Mylo into its core offering from 2023 onwards.

“Bringing the first-ever luxury bag made from Mylo to market is a massive milestone for conscientious consumers, the biomaterials industry, and the future of luxury fashion,” said Bolt Threads founder and CEO Dan Widmaier in a press release.

The result of five years of development with Bolt Threads, the Frayme Mylo bag took over 5000 iterations of the material to perfect, with initial versions being too stiff for handbags and unable to match the durability of animal leather. Crucial to the development of Mylo was early backing and investment. The Bolt Threads consortium comprises adidas, Kering, lululemon, and Stella McCartney, with each brand chosen for their shared values, commitment to quality, and ability to scale worldwide. “If everyone was invested in sustainability, it would develop so much quicker,” said British designer Stella McCartney when unveiling the Frayme Mylo bag.

The Stella McCartney Frayme Mylo bag will be sold for £1,995 ($3520AUD) via the Stella McCartney webstore.
