Following the announcement of a new forthcoming hospitality offering in August, Byron Bay institution Raes on Wategos has opened the doors to its second property Raes Guesthouses. The space is designed by renowned Australian interior designer Tamsin Johnson, who incorporates relaxed Spanish-Hollywood and Balearic design influences, with earthen pastels, hand-painted joinery, and vintage-inspired pieces featuring throughout.

“I wanted to build on the soul of the original Raes property, while thoughtfully adapting to the unique architecture of this space,” said Johnson. An injection of colour and a playful coastal aesthetic work to set the new Raes Guesthouses apart from the original hotel, while a shared materiality seen in the use of marble act as a visual link between the two properties. “Maintaining Raes’ communal spirit was essential, creating a space that feels inviting and familiar to guests.”

A welcome departure from the minimalist design cues often adopted by luxury hotels, Raes Guesthouses is delightfully ornate and elegant, with the curated maximalist interiors conveying an opulent feeling while still retaining the laidback feeling of the coastal town. Each of the ten well-appointed suites features a luxurious king-sized bed with a custom-designed bedhead and captures sweeping views of Wategos Beach or the tropical garden surrounds. Several suites feature private balconies with sun loungers, while others are dressed with custom French linen canopies.

The dining experience is led by Raes executive chef Jason Saxby, who has crafted a dedicated menu for the new outpost. Available in-room, in the communicable dining room, or poolside, the offering draws from the hotel’s coastal setting and comprises a selection of snacks, plates, and sweets. Highlights include Raes signature Australiana dressing, swordfish katsu sandwich, and spanner crab tagliolini, as well as a series of signature cocktails designed to be enjoyed poolside.

Should a more traditional dining setting take your fancy, guests at Raes Guesthouses will also have direct access to the two-hatted  Raes Dining Room, located within the original Raes on Wategos, as well as the alfresco Cellar Bar and the lavish Raes Spa. Premium services extended to guests include an in-house chauffeur to provide drop-offs in and out of town as well as complimentary arrival and departure transfers.

“Raes Guesthouses have allowed us to build on what we know guests love about Raes: warmth, elegance, and generous hospitality,” says Raes managing director Jordy Catalano. “We’re excited to introduce a fresh yet familiar take on luxury, just in time to celebrate our 30th birthday. This expansion allows us to meet growing demand while preserving the boutique, intimate nature of Raes, with a continued commitment to providing personalised service and an exceptional guest experience.
