The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Shows Off Its Chameleonic Personality

  • Audemars Piguet unveils three new Royal Oak Offshore models, each with a distinct aesthetic
  • There are two 43mm stainless steel timepieces — a brown chronograph and a blue time-and-date model
  • The 37mm time-and-date model has a rose gold case, mosaic rubber strap, and polished ivory tapisserie dial

Off the back of the launch of the 23mm mini Royal Oak and the striking asymmetrical [RE]MASTER02, Audemars Piguet continues to signal its intention to design timepieces that suit every taste—and every wrist. Showing off the chameleonic nature of the Royal Oak Offshore, the robust timepiece serves as a canvas for a trio of distinct aesthetics.

First released in 1993, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore represents a bolder, more robust take on the classic Royal Oak. While both models are undeniably sporty, the Royal Oak Offshore showcases a chunkier silhouette and often makes use of a larger tapisserie pattern on the dial (known as ‘méga tapisserie’, compared to the petite or grand tapisserie dials of the standard Royal Oak). Today, the Royal Oak Offshore is not only known for its upsized proportions, but its use of colour and its experimental approach to materials (think an abundance of ceramic and rubber).

Developed with smaller wrists in mind, the 37mm Royal Oak Offshore takes shape in rose gold and is complemented by a guilloché grand tapisserie dial in rhodium and ivory tones, with its polished finish setting it apart from other models in the lineup. The dial plays host to rose gold hour markers and trapezoidal hands crafted from luminescent material. As is par for course with the Offshore range, the 37mm rose gold timepiece features an atypical use of materials, with the bezel executed in grey rubber, which is complemented by a rehaut in the same material. The timepiece is presented on a grey mosaic rubber strap which echoes the pattern of the tapisserie dial.

Playing it safe is the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding 43mm time-and-date model, which takes on a two-tone effect. The 43mm stainless steel case is accented by a blue rubber-coated bezel, with the hue extending onto the subtle méga tapisserie gradient dial. Hour markers and hands are crafted from rhodium-toned gold, with a luminescent centre allowing for optimal legibility under all lighting conditions. It’s presented on a blue rubber strap, bestowing it with a decidedly casual feel.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding Chronograph 43mm

Brown is a core colour in many autumnal wardrobes, but still something of an anomaly in the horological world. Audemars Piguet itself made waves late last year when it launched the first brown ceramic Royal Oak in collaboration with artist Travis Scott. Still, the pairing of a stainless steel case and bezel with a chocolate brown méga tapisserie dial with darkened edges makes for an interesting contrast. The chronograph features black ceramic pushers and screw-down crown, which match the rehaut and the subdials at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock. While the colour choice and the typeface on the dial evoke a more contemporary feel, it’s juxtaposed by the patinated hand-finished alligator strap, a style which is typically a hallmark of more traditional watches. There’s also the option to swap it out for a sporty black rubber strap.
