The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Gets A Gilded Glamour Makeover

Leaning into the ‘Heuer’ in TAG Heuer, the Swiss luxury watchmaker is celebrating its motorsport prestige. Known as the driver’s choice for some of Formula 1’s greatest, the Carrera Chronograph was designed by Jack Heuer — then-CEO of Heuer, later TAG Heuer — in 1963. Its uncluttered, legible dial; sleek lines; and high-performance movement cemented it as a favourite on the racetrack, with yellow gold automatic models first introduced in the 1970s.

The Heuer re. 1158 CHN became Jack Heuer’s personal favourite; easily identified by its yellow gold dial, black subdials, and yellow gold case. Jack Heuer’s strategy of presenting winning drivers with a Heuer 1158 CHN further solidified the watch as a signal of success, with the reference remaining a covetable piece for many a collector today.

Referencing its motorsport legacy, TAG Heuer has introduced an inverted version of the famous Heuer re. 1158 CHN. The new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph retains the practical design of the original, decking it out in black and gold, with the two-tone approach inspired by the colour palette of the John Player Special livery that featured on Formula 1 tracks during the 1970s and 1980s.

A 42mm solid gold case plays host to a rich place sunray brushed dial, with two gilded gold chronograph subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock. A permanent second indicator and date window round of the tricompax layout, with both the indices and hands plated with polished yellow gold.

Flip the watch over and you can admire the Calibre Heuer 02 movement through the sapphire crystal caseback. The in-house chronograph movement features a custom black oscillating mass and comes with 80 hours of power reserve. The retro-inspired timepiece is presented on a black alligator leather strap with a gold pin buckle.

The new gold TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph is pierced at $31,150AUD and is available via the TAG Heuer webstore and in physical boutiques.
