“You smell like a dog,” is set to become a compliment if Dolce & Gabbana has its way. The Italian luxury fashion house has launched its first dedicated fragrance for dogs. Developed in collaboration with renowned nose Emilie Coppermann—who has also created fragrances for the likes of Amouage, Givenchy, Lalique, and Rabanna—Dolce & Gabbana Fefé is named after co-founder Domenico Dolce’s toy poodle.

Dolce & Gabbana Fefé is an alcohol-free formula that has notes of ylang ylang, musk, and sandalwood, with the trio of fragrance notes chosen for their ability to cater to the olfactory sensibilities of dogs. The alcohol-free nature of the formula means it’s gentle enough to be used on the delicate skin of dogs and works to suffuse the fur of luxury lovers’ canines with a scent befitting of their human companions.

The luxury Italian fashion house has stated that the fragrance has been approved by ethologists and well-received by veterinarians. Additionally, Fefé is compliant with the ‘Safe Pet Cosmetics’ protocol by Bureau Veritas Italia, which holds pet products to the same standard as those intended for human use.

While the trio of ylang ylang, musk, and sandalwood is undoubtedly more pleasant than the eau de wet dog your four-legged friend typically reeks of, it’s worth noting that—according to a study published by the National Library of Medicine—a dog’s sense of smell is its primary sense. With over 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses, dogs use scent to gather information about the surrounding environment as well as engage in intra- and inter-species communication, including with their human companions. With this in mind, using a fragrance on a dog can potentially mask or distort the scent signals dogs pick up from their surroundings, while also altering their own scent chemistry and causing other dogs to misidentify them. Simply put: your dog and other dogs may actually prefer the eau de wet dog scent.

That said, the accompanying campaign for Dolce & Gabbana Fefé is undeniably cute — and the dogs featured do look like they’re having a good time. Domenico Dolce’s dog Fefé is naturally the star of the show, with the toy poodle joined by an assortment of charismatic canines.

Dolce & Gabbana Fefé is presented in a green lacquered glass bottle topped with a red metal cap and adorned with a 24-carat gold-plated paw.

Priced at approx $164AUD (€99) Fefé is now available via Dolce & Gabbana boutiques and the brand’s webstore and will be available in David Jones physical stores from September 2024 onwards.
