Ace Hotel Sydney Takes Its Design Cues From The Vast Australian Landscape

Drawing upon the rich history of its Surry Hills surrounds and utilising a warm, cinematic colour palette reminiscent of the Australian landscape, the upcoming Ace Hotel Sydney marks Ace Hotel Group’s first foray into the Australian market. Founded in Seattle in 1999, the group works to “reimagine urban spaces for people who make cities interesting,” working to integrate the local culture into every facet of a hotel’s design.

Created in collaboration with Melbourne-based multidisciplinary design and architecture practice Flack Studio, Ace Hotel Sydney is laden with hyperlocal references that reminisce upon the neighbourhood’s storied history; from the razor gang wars of the 1920s and the rise of modernist art in the 1960s, through to the Gay Solidarity protests of the 1970s. Consolidating culture with style, the 264-room hotel champions the use of natural textures and organic materials to create a luxurious effect. Think acoustic textural walls and tactile window seats in each guest room, and a bold sculptural ochre red concrete staircase in the lobby that blends hues of the outback with utilitarian materials.

“Though its culture and character are all its own, we’ve always felt a strong affinity with Australia — its intrepid optimism and renegade spirit resonates with Ace’s roots on the Pacific Coast of America,” said Brad Wilson, president of Ace Hotel Group. “We love the country’s distinctive brand of modernism, particularly in the use of local organic materials, and were lucky enough to find a perfectly modernist partner in Flack Studio.”

Located within Surry Hills’ historical Tyne House brick factory, the space features a ground-floor restaurant, bar, and cafe in the hotel’s communal lobby, as well as a restaurant and bar on the rooftop. Placing craftsmanship at its forefront, Ace Hotel Sydney incorporates several unique furnishings, artworks, and interior design elements specifically created for the space.

Ace Hotel Sydney is set to open its doors to the public in early 2022.
