The 2023 Rugby World Cup Trophy Will Be Housed In A Bespoke Louis Vuitton Case

Muddy contact sports and a storied French luxury fashion house may not initially seem like the aptest partnership, but Louis Vuitton has a history of creating luxurious travel cases in partnership with some of the most recognisable tournaments in the world. From serving up custom cases for the Davis Cup and Roland Garros to hitting the tracks with the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix and taking to the sea with America’s Cup, Louis Vuitton has created its signature trunks for a slew of covetable trophies. Now, the honour of taking home the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France is enhanced by the announcement that the Webb Ellis Cup will come housed in a bespoke Louis Vuitton travel case.

Taking on the silhouette of the French luxury fashion house’s heritage trunks, the case was handcrafted by the maison’s artisans in the Louis Vuitton workshops in Asnières, just outside Paris. The exterior is covered in the iconic Louis Vuitton monogram canvas, with the two front panels bearing the letter V – dually representing Victory and Vuitton – painted in the tournament colours of blue, red, and white. The side bears the Roman numeral XV, symbolising the 15 players in a rugby union team. The monogram canvas is finished with protective lozine trimming and the same brass corners, locks, and clasps that have been used on Louis Vuitton trunks since the 1960s. The leather lining in the same Pantone blue hue as the V decal marks the first case to utilise this interior style. To finish it off, a Rugby World Cup France 2023 event mark is visible on the interior of the case lid.

“With this new official Trophy Travel Case, Louis Vuitton is both happy and proud to continue its long-time commitment with rugby, highlighting its 160-year tradition of creating remarkable trunks,” said Michael Burke, chairman and CEO at Louis Vuitton. “It is a great opportunity to bring our ‘savoir-faire’ to one of the world’s greatest sporting events, and once again to prove that ‘Victory Travels in Louis Vuitton’.”

“Rugby World Cup France 2023 will showcase to the world all that France has to offer,” added Claude Atcher, France 2023 CEO. “This Official Travel Case is a wonderful representation of Louis Vuitton’s unique expertise and craftsmanship. We are honoured that it will hold the Webb Ellis Cup from now until the end of the tournament in 2023.”

The 2023 Rugby World Cup marks the 10th edition of the tournament and will take place between 8th September and 28th October 2023, a year that also marks 200 years since the invention of rugby.
