Whether it be by displaying a collection via a video game or teaming up with a rival fashion house, Balenciaga is often one to subvert expectations. Balenciaga SS22 well and truly delivers by enlisting some rather unique models for their Paris fashion week show. In their PFW debut, the citizens of Springfield model the Balenciaga SS22 collection, lured to the French capital with the promise of a new KFC on the Champs-Élysées.

A typical red carpet at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris with the likes of Naomi Campbell, Cardi B, Offset, Lewis Hamilton, and Elliot Page making an appearance was actually the precursor for a special one-off 10-minute episode of The Simpsons. The clip opens with Homer Simpson – in typical Homer style – once again forgetting his wife’s birthday (doh!) and persuading Balenciaga creative director Demna Gvasalia to lend Marge a dress from the Spanish luxury fashion house.
Through a series of somewhat plausible – for Springfield – events, the citizens of the “style deprived” town are personally invited by Gvasalia to walk the runway in Paris for Balenciaga SS22, watched by an assembled crowd including Anna Wintour, Justin Bieber, and Kim Kardashian West. Highlights include Patty and Selma Bouvier’s (literally) red hot approach to fashion, Homer Simpson donning a signature Balenciaga puffer jacket, our favourite four-fingered anticapitalist Lisa Simpson strutting the runway “for research” alongside Maggie in matching red peplum dresses, Sherri and Terri twinning in black architectural ballgowns, Waylon Smithers rocking a red dress complete with Balenciaga’s infamous thigh-high stretch-satin knife boots, and Marge Simpson enjoying her best birthday ever as the belle of the ball, closing the show in a luminous floor-length gold gown complete with an oversized bow at the back.
Proving fun and fashion don’t have to be mutually exclusive terms, Balenciaga SS22 x The Simpsons cements Balenciaga as the most memorable Paris fashion week show of the season, capturing the attention of not only fashion aficionados, but catering to the everyman too. After all, pretty much anyone has enjoyed an episode of The Simpsons at some point. All in all, Balenciaga SS22 x The Simpsons may just be our favourite crossover of the year.
