Following the ‘hacking’ of its designs by Gucci for the latter’s 100th anniversary Aria collection, Balenciaga is taking us around the world with creative director Demna Gvasalia’s latest collection. The Balenciaga Winter 2021 collection lookbook (which is technically a pre-collection, by the way) comprises 58 coed casual and formalwear looks shot by photographer Patrick Welde, who superimposes models into iconic tourist attractions like the Duomo di Milano, Leaning Tower of Pisa, and the Taj Mahal.

Primary to the garments themselves for Gvasalia was the use of sustainable materials, with almost the entire collection crafted from eco-friendly and recycled textiles. The collection itself blends Balenciaga’s signature oversized tailoring in the form of disproportionately outsized blazers and fluid, oversized dresses that are one-size-fits-most, with elevated casuals in block colours.
Though the Spanish luxury fashion house has long been known for its outerwear, the Balenciaga Winter 2021 collection approaches the category from a different perspective, seen through ‘90s style tracksuits, fleece jackets, padded coats, and parkas. Hoodies and t-shirts spell out ‘GAY’ in a form that bears a remarkable likeness to the GAP logo, while the Balenciaga split toe heels are reimagined in soft leather.
