Utilitarian Principles Form The Basis Of Dr. Martens x Engineered Garments

Dr. Martens x Engineered Garments have linked up for the fifth time, revising a classic silhouette from the British footwear manufacturer. Fusing the ‘over-engineered’ approach to army surplus store essentials propounded by Engineered Garments with the utilitarian take on classic footwear put forward by Dr. Martens, the collaboration sees the Dr. Martens 1461 silhouette equipped with an ‘overly engineered’ asymmetric lace system that traverses down one side of the shoe.

Founded in 2002 by ‘vintage clothing hoarder’ Daiki Suzuki, Engineered Garments prides itself on being engineered rather than designed. Pieces take their cues from its founder’s extensive archive of sportswear, work wear, and military attire, suffusing functional pieces with minute details like cross collars in t-shirts to prevent stretching, single needle stitching in dress shirts, and an abundance of pockets in jackets.

Utilitarian Principles Form The Basis Of Dr. Martens x Engineered Garments

Prior to launching the Nepenthes’ US outpost in 2002, Suzuki would travel across the western hemisphere, sourcing and stockpiling vintage pieces from lesser-known brands and second-hand stores, even drawing up a map for regional clothing specialties; moccasins from New England, suiting from Manhattan, and work boots from Northamptonshire.

This appreciation for localised manufacturing traditions drew Suzuki to Dr. Martens, with his first pair being a beaten-up pair of 1461 shoes, with a distinct ghillie lacing system, sourced from a vintage store in the early ‘90s. The fifth collab between the duo is handmade by Dr. Marten’s cobblers in Northamptonshire and modelled by their makers, speaking to the brands’ shared appreciation of timeless design language.

The latest Dr. Martens x Engineered Garments collaboration drops on the 9th September, via the Dr. Martens webstore.
