Sail Away With Hermès SS22 Menswear, A Soothing Balm For Our Souls

An ode to the sanctuary of simplicity, the Hermès SS22 Menswear collection proposed an elegant yet contemporary style of dressing, remaining true to its status as the foremost luxury fashion house in the world. Véronique Nichanian, creative director of menswear at Hermès designed the collection as “an expression of grace, fluidity, and the shifting nature of our lives,” exploring the concepts of duality and juxtapositions through hybrid colour schemes and strategic styling.

Taking place in the courtyard of the Mobilier National in Paris, the Hermès SS22 Menswear collection was showcased to the majority of the world (with the exception of a small live audience) through a short film by theatre director Cyril Teste, in his third collaboration with the French luxury fashion house. Displaying that pre-recorded fashion shows can be interesting, Teste created a multi-dimensional view of the show using a single-shot camera style and swooping close-ups, providing viewers with an almost interactive experience.

Proving men needn’t be afraid of colour, the collection was rendered in a colour palette of pastel hues like pale pinks and blues, soft greys, and mint green, interspersed with pops of vibrant shades of turquoise, lemon yellow, and magenta, all underscored by classic neutrals like carbon, cream, and beige. The clothing itself epitomised the luxury of lightness, with pleated trousers, Bermuda shorts, soft suiting, cosy cardigans, and silky patterned shirts appearing effortless and breezy yet refined, letting the fabric do the talking.

A masterclass in styling, Hermès SS22 Menswear demonstrated a plethora of techniques in terms of how to wear your clothes, rather than have them wear you. Impeccable half-tucks ensure an equal opportunity look-in for your shirt and shorts, cuffed pleated trousers show off a hint of ankle, rope belts provide an insouciant take on the concept of luxury, and knitwear adorned with florals or rendered in candied hues of pink and orange add a sense of fun to plain trousers or Bermuda shorts.

With an inimitable simplicity running through its veins, the Hermès SS22 Menswear is so carefree, airy, and light it makes us feel like we really could sail away.
