This Finnish Hotel Proposes That True Luxury Can Be Found In Considered Discomfort

While many luxury hotels and accommodations within the wilderness provide a lavish respite from the elements, Panorama Landscape Hotel & Forest Spa seeks to embrace its rugged setting. Perched atop the Tahko mountain in Eastern Finland, the newly opened boutique accommodation spans ten minimalist cabins, each working to foster a dialogue with its frosty surrounds.

Panorama Landscape Hotel & Forest Spa

Designed by acclaimed Finnish architect Sami Rintala of Norway-based Rintala Eggertsson Architects, Panorama Landscape Hotel & Forest Spa is divided into three parts. The restaurant takes on lighter tones and is designed with socialisation in mind; the darker, moody spa which sets an intimate tone; and the ten freestanding cabins, interspersed amongst the trees to reduce disruption to the landscape.

The offering is defined by a connection to the landscape, with the Lähde Forest Spa encouraging guests to tap into their wild side. Set outside on the hill itself, the spa comprises three wood-burning saunas and five hot and cold pools, each of which features views out to Lake Syväri. Drawing from ancient eastern bathing cultures such as Japanese onsen, there are both hot and cold pools available; the latter supplied by a natural spring. The outdoor setting of the pools allows for a contrast of temperatures, with guests able to soak in the steaming pool amidst the frosty winter air. The fragmented nature of the spa means that every pool and sauna offers a different experience and represents a novel opportunity to connect with nature.

Each of the ten cabins is constructed from traditional shingle walls and features expansive views of the surrounding landscape. Named after the local wildlife like bears and wolves, the cabin interiors are designed by Anita Koponen and channel the signature Scadinavian flair for cosiness in a decidedly minimalist fashion.

Naturally, no good boutique hotel is complete without a good restaurant. The Havu Kitchen & Bar is helmed by chef Kim Mustonen and defined by ‘Scandinavian purity’, with dishes using locally sourced ingredients.
