Seiko Releases An Icy New Prospex Diver For 110th Watchmaking Anniversary

The first Seiko dive watch — also the first Japanese dive watch ever made — debuted in 1965, becoming a fast favourite amongst Arctic and Antarctic explorers, going on to become the official timepiece of the Japanese Antarctic Research team. Seiko then went on to release the reference 6105-8000 diver’s watch in 1968, doubling the water resistance to 300m and showcasing a rounder, more flowy case design.

Seiko revamped the classic 1968 diver last year, with the release of the Seiko Prospex SLA055. Now, to continue its 110th watchmaking anniversary celebrations, the Japanese watch manufacturer is releasing a new iteration of the popular silhouette.

Inspired by polar landscapes, the new Seiko Prospex Save the Ocean Ref. SPB333 features a silvery white textured dial that reflects the glaciers that dominate the Arctic and Antarctic. Indexes and hands are coated with Lumibrite to maximize legibility in the dark.

The 41mm case emulates the shape of the original Seiko 6105-8000 from 1968, instantly recognisable by its curved silhouette and distinct crown position at 4 o’clock. Boasting 200m water resistance, the Seiko Prospex Save the Ocean Ref. SPB333 is powered by the in-house calibre 6R35, a 21,600 vph automatic movement that delivers a power reserve of 70 hours. The stainless steel case and bracelet are equipped with a super-hard protective coating, while an anti-reflective coating on the inner surface of the sapphire crystal promotes easy readability from all angles.

The watch is presented on a five-row stainless steel bracelet and comes with an additional braided Seichu strap made of recycled bottles. The Seiko Prospex Save the Ocean Ref. SPB333 is limited to 5000 pieces. Priced at $1995AUD, it will be available from January 2023 via Seiko boutiques and selected retail partners.
