The Vacheron Constantin Historiques 222 Signals A Return To Elegance

Horological stalwart Vacheron Constantin has pulled from the archives for its latest release, with a faithful issue of one of its most significant timepieces. Initially launched in 1977, the 222 – also known as the ‘Jumbo’ – has since become an iconic piece. Conceived by German-born designer Jorg Hysek, the 222 signalled the Swiss watch manufacturer’s first foray into the world of ‘sporty-chic’ watches. Featuring an integrated bracelet design, the Vacheron Constantin 222 sits in the same playing field as the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and Patek Philippe Nautilus, both launched earlier that decade.

Blending sporty codes with timeless elegance, the Vacheron Constantin 222 enjoyed a mere eight-year production life, however, has held a place in the hearts of watch collectors for decades. Characterised by its integrated bracelet, Maltese cross emblem on the right-hand corner of the case, and monobloc flat-based tonneau-shaped case topped by a prominent fluted bezel, the Vacheron Constantin 222 boasted exemplary thinness for its time at 7mm, largely due to its ultra-thin movement measuring just below 3.05mm. Refined baton hands and straight hour markers contributed to its understated elegance, while the screwed-down bracelet with its oversized hexagonal centre links added a sporty feel. Originally released in a 37mm case which was nicknamed the ‘Jumbo’, the 222 was later iterated in 34mm and 34mm cases of steel, yellow gold, and two-tone iterations.

Staying faithful to the original design language of the 222 while imbuing it with a contemporary feel, Vacheron Constantin has released a re-edition of the 37mm yellow gold 222. Retaining all key design features of the original, the re-issued Vacheron Constantin Historiques 222 makes a few adjustments in the name of comfort and reliability.

The case now features an exhibition back, which reveals the in-house calibre 2455/2 with an oscillating weight, redesigned specifically for this model. Much like its predecessor, the dial is a classic shade of yellow gold and looks identical to the original with the exception of a new date window. Turn out the lights and you’ll find the hour markets and baton-type hands have been coated in green-tinted Super-LumiNova for improved legibility. The gold satin-finished bracelet with a triple-blade folding clasp has also received a slight redesign to ensure a more ergonomic feel.
