Mila Kunis & Ashton Kutcher’s Sustainable Farmhouse Is A Home, Not An Estate

In the hills of Los Angeles sits a six-acre property spanning the main house, guesthouse, and barbeque pavilion. Belonging to actors Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher, the property takes on a decidedly laid-back, rustic aesthetic despite its expansive nature. “We wanted a home, not an estate,” Kunis tells Architectural Digest. “We wanted the house to look like an old barn, something that had been here for decades, that was then converted into a house. But it also had to feel modern and relevant,” Kutcher adds.

The home does indeed somewhat resemble an old (albeit rather expensive and chic) barn, with the pair building the farmhouse from scratch. While designing and executing a house from the ground up has the potential to make or break a couple, fortunately, Kunis and Kutcher were on the same page (or screen) from the get-go. “When we looked at each other’s [Pinterest] boards, 90 percent of the images we selected were the same,” Kutcher told Architectural Digest.

The couple enlisted the help of architect Howard Backen of the firm Backen & Gillam Architects and interior designer Vicky Charles of Charles & Co. to bring their vision to life. Sustainability was the name of the game, with the house entirely powered by photovoltaics. A combination of interesting fabrics and patterns serves to complement the rustic textures of the farmhouse, making the open space seem cosy and nurturing.
